Beaucoup de disques, d'opéra surtout. Et un narrateur. Il est peintre. Ces dernières années, il a fait beaucoup de portraits, il cherche à retrouver l'inspiration. Cette maison n'est pas la sienne, elle appartient à Tomohiko Amada, un artiste de génie qui a vécu à Vienne avant l'Anschluss et qui, de retour au Japon, s'est mis à peindre des tableaux Nihonga. Il a 92 ans, il est sénile, il vit à l'hôpital. Cette maison, le narrateur y a trouvé refuge après un mois d'errance, quand sa femme lui a annoncé qu'elle voulait divorcer. Dans le grenier de la maison, le narrateur trouve un tableau, soigneusement caché, une peinture d'une grande violence, le meurtre d'un vieillard, une scène comme tirée du Don Giovanni de Mozart mais qui serait située au Japon du 7e siècle. C'est Le Meurtre du Commandeur. Un jour, le vieillard du tableau se manifeste. Il est en taille réduite, mais c'est bien lui, le Commandeur. Que veut-il ? Quel est son message ? Le narrateur retrouvera-t-il la voie de la création ?
The Conservationist
Mehring is rich. He has all the privileges and possessions that South Africa has to offer, but his possessions refuse to remain objects. His wife, son and mistress leave him: his foreman and workers become increasingly indifferent to his stewardship: even the land rises up, as drought, then flood, destroy his farm. As the upheaval in Mehring's world increasingly resembles that in the country as a whole, it becomes clear that only a seismic shift in ideas and concrete action can avert annihilation.
