Dans le grenier de la maison, le narrateur trouve un tableau, soigneusement caché, une peinture d'une grande violence, le meurtre d'un vieillard, une scène comme tirée du Don Giovanni de Mozart mais qui serait située au Japon du 7e siècle. C'est Le Meurtre du Commandeur. Un jour, le vieillard du tableau se manifeste. Il est en taille réduite, mais c'est bien lui, le Commandeur. Que veut-il ? Quel est son message ? Le narrateur retrouvera-t-il la voie de la création ?
