Tout oppose en apparence Stephanie, une jeune veuve sans emploi qui partage son temps entre son fils Miles et la rédaction de son » blog de maman « , et Emily, une femme d’affaires sophistiquée et mariée. Elles s’entendent pourtant à merveille et ont noué, dans leur petite ville du Connecticut, une amitié aussi forte que celle qui lie leurs deux garçons de cinq ans.
Et lorsqu’Emily lui demande de récupérer son fils Nicky à la sortie de l’école, Stephanie accepte tout naturellement. Mais les jours passent et Emily ne revient pas. Insidieusement, Stephanie prend alors sa place auprès de Sean, le mari d’Emily. Car on peut toujours compter sur elle pour s’occuper d’autrui. De façon peut-être un peu trouble, ambiguë et excessive parfois. C’est aussi ce que semble penser l’ombre qui, cachée, épie Stephanie et Sean, bien décidée à ce que chacun finisse par payer pour ses crimes.
